Tamil sangam literature glorifies Murugan as the “Red God seated on a blue peacock, young and beautiful”. The statue portrays Murugan with one body, six heads, and twelve hands, each hand holding a weapon. Murugan is seated in Lalitasana pose (one leg folded inwards and the other leg hanging down) on a peacock which is standing on lotus pedestal. The right hands of Murugan holds the following weapons arranged from top to bottom – soola kathi (diamond shaped sword), sword, plough, ankusha (goad), and a mace (Gada). Likewise the weapons on his left hands arranged from top to bottom are trishul (trident), shield, bow, pasha (noose), and an arrow. His lower right hand shows Abhaya mudra, and his lower left hand shows Varada mudra. Each face of Murugan has a beautiful expression, and He is seen adorned with beautiful ornaments and a vastram (clothing) that is neatly draped. The details of the statue shown with respect to the iconographical attributes of Lord Murugan best explains the fine workmanship by our artisans.
Posture & Symbols: Lord Murugan is often depicted in a standing posture, holding his divine spear or lance known as the Vel, which symbolizes power, knowledge, and the destruction of evil. He may be shown with one or both hands in abhaya mudra (gesture of protection) or holding the Vel close to his body.
Peacock Mount (Vahana): Lord Murugan is usually depicted with his mount, a peacock (named Paravani), which symbolizes the destruction of pride and ego. In a small statue, this may be subtly detailed at the base.
Elegant Armor & Ornaments: Dust marble statues often showcase intricate designs on Murugan’s chest armor and jewelry, such as a crown or headgear, bracelets, and necklaces.
